Vintage Fashion Shoot

A recent fashion shoot brought back memories of a vintage age with fur (fake) shrugs, tea dresses and mary jane crossbar shoes. From the forties the shoot progressed through the 60's with a french Birkinesque look and a flash back to the frizzy 80's.

Young Designer Product Photo Shoot

Christy Llewellyn is a young textile designer who has just started her own fledgling business designing one off hair bands, re-designing vintage clothes and using old dress patterns and fabric to recreate echos of fashions past, with a fresh perspective of course! She asked me to photograph some product shots for promotional material and we had a lot of fun on shoot day. Thanks to all involved and good luck Christy!

Oxjam 2010

It was a fantastic opportunity to be asked to photograph the Oxjam Takeover in Cardiff's Womanby Street on October 3rd, great music, good atmosphere and even better than that all profits going to Oxfam good causes.

Chris Tinsleys 70th Party

I was asked to come along to celebrate Chris' party in Cornwall recently. Previously she had been asked what she wanted for her birthday and her reply was simply, 'Elvis'....and the theme for the party was born. Guests donned the customary white suit, black wig and wide shades and sang along to a variety of Elvis classics. Moved to tears at one stage by a cleverly rewritten version of 'Are you Lonesome Tonight', one of the verses went like this;

Are you 70 tonight,
Can this really be right?
Are you sure you're not muddled at all?
Is your memory clear?
Are your marbles still here?
Do you here them if somebody calls?

Pontyclun RFC Summer Ball

The Pontyclun RFC Summer Ball was held on July 9th 2010. The theme of the evening celebrated dance and music with tables named after famous dances, such as the Jive, The Lindyhop and the Rumba. Staff and volunteers worked tirelessly, using inexpensive materials and a great deal of creative talent, to transform a windowless function room into 5 star setting. The band played a wide range of tunes from Buble to Winehouse and I'm sure everyone took to the floor at least once. Congratulations to the Club for a fantastic evening.

Tiger Bay Brawlers @ Barfly July 2nd 2010

The Tiger Bay Brawlers roller derby team threw a fantastic fundraising night in Cardiffs' Barfly on Friday night. We had music from four brilliant bands and cup cakes, t-shirts, jewelery and a raffle which raised over £1,000 for the team. So well done to all the girls. Here is the video;

Photo Diary

I decided to have fun on the night and play around with different settings in manual mode without using any flash. I turned the ISO up to 1000 and put myself in an inconspicuous corner to try and capture the Brawlers. Because of the high ISO some of the images were very grainy and some worked better than others. Here are just a few;

Notably categorized as one of the hardest situations for photographers. In order to master photography you must be able to master the lighting conditions for every shot. Low moving light such as you get in a concert coupled with moving subjects makes this incredibly difficult. It was only the second time I had attempted taking photos in low lighting without using any flash and picked up some great tips from experienced band photographers from numerous websites. I used a prime 50mm f1.8 lens and played with shutter speeds to try to capture the ambience. The subjects were moving so fast at times the images were blurred. Let's just say it was incredibly difficult!

I think I eventually got the hang of it, but had a lot of unusable images in the process. A great tip was to try to remember the lighting sequence which ranged from white to red. I think I managed to capture some good shots but there was a lot of unusable shots too! Which from what I can gather is the nature of the beast within the realms of low light, fast moving, no flash photography!
